Halley VI Research Station is located on a floating ice shelf in the Weddell Sea. It is the first re-locatable research centre in the world. This project has been awarded many times. Halley used to be an overwintering station since 1956, however due to recent activity of the Brunt Ice Shelf, winters had to be stopped. The ice shelf stays under glaciologists' observation. Nowadays, Halley Station is home and a workplace for scientists and technicians staying there during the Antarctic summer season. Thanks to the automation project, the station can provide scientific data all year around when it stays unmanned. The main purpose of the station is to study climate change, sea-lever rise, space weather and the ozone hole, which has been reported firstly by BAS scientists in 1985.
